‘Music Theory through Composition’ is a fun and interactive way to learn about music theory, helping to develop a well rounded and creative musician. The lessons I offer cover all aspects of the ABRSM examinations, but are demonstrated in a practical way that makes the learning of music theory exciting and useful. Composition and Improvisation are an important and often the most satisfying part of being a musician. It is a wonderful addition to learning an instrument.
I currently teach composition and music technology part time at Thomas’s Day school in Battersea. I run workshops every week, focusing on projects termly. The lessons are fun and focus on topics that children will engage with. Last term we covered the music of James Bond, where the children were able to play with the main Bond themes and compose their own. Through this, we cover aspects of music theory, composition and music technology in a fun, practical way. By the end of term each student has a finished piece of music on a CD to take home. All the children I have taught at this school have created some wonderful pieces of music, that they are proud of and are enthusiastic about.

After many years of experience teaching clarinet and ensembles in schools and music centres in London, I currently teach clarinet at Camden School for Girls and the Camden Saturday Music Centre.
Dedicated to music both as a player and as a teacher, I have gained a lot of insight into working with children of all ages and different cultures. It is rewarding for me to use my skills with children in creative ways that will bring out each child’s individual musical and technical potential.
Most recent qualification are post graduate soloists diploma(Prix de Virtuosite premiere Prix from Geneva Conservatoire, Switzerland and a Post Graduate Orchestral diploma from Guildhall School of music and Drama, London.
I have played specialist, classical and jazz flute for thirty-five years. I trained originally with Barry Robinson Lead Saxophone with the BBC Big Band and with Kate Hill Professor of Flute at the Royal Academy 0f Music.
I have performed in a large number of venues in the past year including Ronnie Scotts, The Royal Festival Hall and the Natural History Museum; I have also played recently with some of the top jazz musicians in the UK including Alan Barnes, Jim Mullen and Henry Lowther.
After twenty five years in operational management in banking and with Thames Water I have for the past year entered the music business in a professional capacity. I have previously had pupils and following requests from a number of people for tuition I am seeking to further this and extend the amount of tuition that I have previously done.
I am best at teaching in a more informal style similar to the Suzuki method but am also happy to accommodate official graded teaching if that is required.

Please feel free to give me a call or send me an email if you have any questions or want to arrange a lesson.
I’m available daytime Monday-Wednesday (sometimes Thursday & Friday when I’m not teaching at schools) and I can also do Friday afternoons and Saturdays. Sundays may also be doable on certain weeks. If you contact me I’m sure we’ll be able to arrange a time and location that will suit you.
I’m also particularly interested in teaching ‘classical’ musicians how to play by ear and how to improvise.
If you’d like to free yourself from the constraints of the written page, be more imaginative and develop your ears for working out music (of any genre!) then you should come along to one of the workshops I host on Improvisation at Les Aldrich Music.
A little more information and the schedule is available here: http://lesaldrichmusic.co.uk/events/
Finally a little background on myself:
I’ve been playing music every day since I was around 4 years old (1978!) and I’ve been teaching non-stop for the last 16 years. Much of my teaching over these years has been at a variety of schools in Haringey, Enfield & Barnet (both primary and secondary) as well as a very successful Rock & Pop course at the EBMC (East Barnet Music Centre) for around 12 years. Throughout this period I have also had countless private students.
I currently teach at Finchley Catholic Boys School (for the last 12 years) and privately (mostly at my studio) in the evenings and on Saturdays. When not doing that I am often composing and recording my own music, collaborating with friends, learning new instruments & caring for my son who is on the autistic spectrum – I also have extensive experience of teaching people with special needs.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you learn to play what you want in a way you enjoy.
