Harps available for students to hire

BA Hons (Oxon), MA (RAM), LRAM

Rachel teaches the harp at the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music, at Berkhamsted School and coaches for the National Children’s Orchestras. She also has an ever expanding cohort of private harp students, currently numbering around twenty five, whom she teaches either from her harp studio in High Barnet, or at a private house in Muswell Hill. In 2011 she was awarded the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music (LRAM) teaching diploma, and is a graduate of St. Peter’s College, Oxford and the Royal Academy of Music.

Her private students attend many North London schools including Rhodes Avenue, Muswell Hill, Tetherdown, Fitzjohn’s and St. Michael’s primary schools, Fortismere, Dame Alice Owen, Highgate, Channing, Mill Hill and Latymer secondary schools. She also teaches university students from Kings College, London, and Imperial College.

As well as teaching, Rachel regularly gives workshops and interactive concerts for children, including solo recitals for the ‘Bach to Baby’ series and outreach work for the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Wigmore Hall and on behalf of charities including ‘Live Music Now’, the CAVATINA Chamber Music Trust and ‘Music and the Deaf’.

As a performer, Rachel has played with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of India, London Concert Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, and the European Union Youth Orchestra. She has recorded for both the Decca and Avie record labels with New College and Christ Church Cathedral Choirs, Oxford, respectively, and performed with Her Majesty’s Choir of the Chapel Royal in a concert at Buckingham Palace, which was broadcast on Classic FM on Christmas afternoon. She also played for Howard Goodall’s album, Inspired, released by Decca/Classic FM, and works regularly as a duo with a flute player, the Antara Flute & Harp Duo, giving music club recitals and playing in festivals all over the UK, including recently at St. David’s Festival and Cheltenham Festival.

“As an active performer, I demonstrate as much as possible in lessons, and hope that having a teacher who is busy giving concerts, as well as teaching, will be inspiring for my own students. I am fascinated by the learning process, and enjoy the challenge of finding new and creative ways of helping students to learn, appreciate the importance of practising and ultimately enjoy their playing. Making sure each child fulfils their own potential, and understanding what each individual is capable of accomplishing , will hopefully ensure that all my pupils feel a sense of pride and achievement in their harping life, however far they decide to take their playing.”
