I have been playing guitar and bass for over thirty years, initially having trained classically but then going on to play pretty much all styles in a variety of live and recording situations.

I am not going to tell you what you should play – everyone plays for a different reason and a significant part of my role is to enable you to do what you want to do, whether that is writing, performing, recording, passing classical grades, jamming or anything else such as stage fright, theory exams or even creative block.

In this way, all lessons are tailored to the individual always.

I am a young, energetic and creative individual based in North London, and I feel that I have much to offer to both younger and older generations due to fact that I have had diverse educational and musical experiences. Having lived in numerous countries, I believe that I’m capable of finding common ground with people of different backgrounds allowing me to teach in a fun and refreshing way.

In my four years of studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA (USA), I was surrounded by inspirational teachers and fellow students, who shared the same enthusiasm for music allowing me to gain a greater depth in the craft. As a result, I have a good foundation in music theory and guitar technique, which allows me to pass on information in an easy to follow and comprehensive manner.

I always aim to make the lessons a fun experience, but at the same time and educational one, so that the student gets the most out of the lesson.

I am a classical guitar, mandolin and theory of music teacher with 30 years’ experience.

I am happy to teach all level of players from absolute beginners up to Diploma level – from the very young to the more mature.

I do encourage all my students to study music theory as it does improve their understanding of the music that they play, however, I have come to learn that not everyone is as enthusiastic about music theory as I am, so it is not a compulsory option.

When preparing students for examinations, I prefer to follow the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) syllabus. That is also not a compulsory option.

I only teach from home in N10.

Qualifications:

I received my degree in Music from the University of Sydney and studied classical guitar at the NSW Conservatorium of Music. After this, I spent two years’ intense study with the classical guitarist José Luis González in Spain, who was a student of Andrés Segovia’s.  I have had masterclasses with David Russell, Hubert Käppel and Gordon Crosskey; I still regularly attend international masterclasses of classical guitarists and of other instrumentalists when possible.

I play and teach a large range of instruments to a high level, covering pretty much any musical style.

Instruments I teach include:

All Guitars (classical, steel strung, electric (my speciality) and bass) and I have a fantastic collection of various guitars at my studio with different tunings etc.

Strings (Double Bass, Cello, Viola, Violin, Mandolin and Ukulele)

Piano / Keyboard (both classical and jazz)

Drums

Flute and Saxophone

I also teach Music Theory, including classical, pop, jazz or any style you may be interested in.

I have had students of all ages (young to old), abilities (beginner to pro).

Lessons with me can either take place at your home or at my studio in Southgate/East Barnet (EN4).

Please feel free to give me a call or send me an email if you have any questions or want to arrange a lesson.

-

I’m available daytime Monday-Wednesday (sometimes Thursday & Friday when I’m not teaching at schools) and I can also do Friday afternoons and Saturdays. Sundays may also be doable on certain weeks. If you contact me I’m sure we’ll be able to arrange a time and location that will suit you.

-

I’m also particularly interested in teaching ‘classical’ musicians how to play by ear and how to improvise.

If you’d like to free yourself from the constraints of the written page, be more imaginative and develop your ears for working out music (of any genre!) then you should come along to one of the workshops I host on Improvisation at Les Aldrich Music.

A little more information and the schedule is available here: http://lesaldrichmusic.co.uk/events/

-

Finally a little background on myself:

I’ve been playing music every day since I was around 4 years old (1978!) and I’ve been teaching non-stop for the last 16 years. Much of my teaching over these years has been at a variety of schools in Haringey, Enfield & Barnet (both primary and secondary) as well as a very successful Rock & Pop course at the EBMC (East Barnet Music Centre) for around 12 years. Throughout this period I have also had countless private students.

I currently teach at Finchley Catholic Boys School (for the last 12 years) and privately (mostly at my studio) in the evenings and on Saturdays. When not doing that I am often composing and recording my own music, collaborating with friends, learning new instruments & caring for my son who is on the autistic spectrum – I also have extensive experience of teaching people with special needs.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you learn to play what you want in a way you enjoy.
