I am an experienced cello teacher, having taught over the past twenty years at Wycombe Abbey School, City of London School for Girls, and currently at Channing School. My pupils achieve very good ABRSM exam results, and success with school music scholarship applications.
I lead a busy performing life in addition to my teaching. I am currently a member of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, and have been a member of the English Chamber Orchestra. I also work regularly with the London Symphony Orchestra. As a chamber musician I have performed at the Wigmore Hall, for BBC Radio 3 and made numerous CDs.
I teach from my Crouch End home; all ages are welcome, including mature students. I do not teach complete beginners.

I have been teaching cello from my home in East Finchley for the last 25 years. I studied music at Oxford University and cello as a postgraduate at the Royal College of Music, and have worked regularly with all the major London orchestras. I have been an associate member of the London Philharmonic Orchestra for the last 20 years, and also freelance with the orchestra of the Royal Opera House, and the London Symphony Orchestra. I also perform with various chamber ensembles.
I teach all levels, from beginners up to diploma, and enter pupils for ABRSM and Trinity exams, in which they achieve good results. I also believe in the importance of learning to perform, and encourage my pupils to be good all-round musicians by enjoying ensemble playing and taking part in concerts. I also welcome adults for refresher lessons.
When appropriate, I include theory in my cello lessons, in order for pupils to pass the ABRSM Grade 5 Theory exam, if required. I also teach theory separately to non-cellists.
I play and teach a large range of instruments to a high level, covering pretty much any musical style.
Instruments I teach include:
All Guitars (classical, steel strung, electric (my speciality) and bass) and I have a fantastic collection of various guitars at my studio with different tunings etc.
Strings (Double Bass, Cello, Viola, Violin, Mandolin and Ukulele)
Piano / Keyboard (both classical and jazz)
Flute and Saxophone
I also teach Music Theory, including classical, pop, jazz or any style you may be interested in.
I have had students of all ages (young to old), abilities (beginner to pro).
Lessons with me can either take place at your home or at my studio in Southgate/East Barnet (EN4).
Please feel free to give me a call or send me an email if you have any questions or want to arrange a lesson.
I’m available daytime Monday-Wednesday (sometimes Thursday & Friday when I’m not teaching at schools) and I can also do Friday afternoons and Saturdays. Sundays may also be doable on certain weeks. If you contact me I’m sure we’ll be able to arrange a time and location that will suit you.
I’m also particularly interested in teaching ‘classical’ musicians how to play by ear and how to improvise.
If you’d like to free yourself from the constraints of the written page, be more imaginative and develop your ears for working out music (of any genre!) then you should come along to one of the workshops I host on Improvisation at Les Aldrich Music.

Finally a little background on myself:
I’ve been playing music every day since I was around 4 years old (1978!) and I’ve been teaching non-stop for the last 16 years. Much of my teaching over these years has been at a variety of schools in Haringey, Enfield & Barnet (both primary and secondary) as well as a very successful Rock & Pop course at the EBMC (East Barnet Music Centre) for around 12 years. Throughout this period I have also had countless private students.
I currently teach at Finchley Catholic Boys School (for the last 12 years) and privately (mostly at my studio) in the evenings and on Saturdays. When not doing that I am often composing and recording my own music, collaborating with friends, learning new instruments & caring for my son who is on the autistic spectrum – I also have extensive experience of teaching people with special needs.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you learn to play what you want in a way you enjoy.
